Lawn care guide

Lawn care after seeding

What to do after I repair or seed your lawn. New seed needs watering, the right first mow, and leaves kept off it.

Watering

Keep the top of the soil damp until the new grass is up. Seed that dries out after it sprouts usually won't come back.

  • Water lightly once or twice a day until the grass comes up, more often in hot or windy weather.
  • Keep the surface damp, not soaked. Puddles and runoff wash seed away.
  • Once the grass is up and growing, water less often but for longer.

Mowing

Hold off on the first mow until the new grass is tall enough to take it.

  • Wait until the new grass is about 3 to 4 inches tall before the first mow.
  • Use a sharp blade, and don't cut more than the top third of the grass.
  • Keep heavy foot traffic off the new seed until it's established.

Leaves

Keep leaves off the new grass. A layer of wet leaves blocks the light and can smother young grass.

  • Rake or blow leaves off the seeded areas as they fall.
  • Use a light touch with the rake on new grass.
  • Clear leaves before a rain, when they mat down.
